Rules
General rules for competitions require athletes to have a valid ASA competition number at the time of achievement and be a paid-up member of the masters athletics association of their province of domicile. Official rules can be downloaded per category.
Standards
Standards are the specific times that athletes must meet in order to qualify for a medal or South African colours. These are set by the masters athletics association.
Applications
An athlete must complete the necessary form and submit their field event record. This must be submitted to the respective athletic governing body as specified on the application.
CGMA Standards
CGMA standards are set by South African Masters Athletics (SAMA) and provide the criteria for qualifying times/distances to achieve colors. View the criteria below (opens pop-up).

The completed application and supporting documents must be submitted to the Regional Records Chair after the IAAF or WMA Masters Member of the athlete has certified the record.
The event must be sanctioned by ASA (Athletics South Africa) of the IAAF.
Medals are available at both regional and national levels. They are awarded by CGMA and SAMA.
The criteria for CGMA are in accordance with SAMA standards.
The award of national colours is the highest distinction to be awarded to an athlete.
To be awarded Colours in Masters Athletics, an athlete must meet the following:
1. Age Requirement: Be at least 35 years old.
2. Performance Standards: Achieve specific performance standards.
3. Be a member of SAMA(CGMA) for 2 consecutive years.
Road National (non-stadia) Events
1. Age: Athletes must be at least 35 years old.
2. Membership: Must be a registered member of SAMA (CGMA).
3. Race Participation: Athletes must meet the standard in a minimum of 2 road races in the same age group.
4. Race Distances: Races must be 10km/ Half Marathon/ Marathon/ 50km Road Race Walk.
Applications
The 2024 National Colors Standards will be used as the basis for assessment for the award of National Colors.
The deadline for applications to the Provincial Secretary is 31 January 2025.
Required Documents:
- Zero Test and Photo Finish Image (for Fully Automatic Timing events)
- Lap Scoring Card (for events 3000m and longer)
- Wind Measurement Certificate (if applicable)
- Official Results of the event
