History of Masters Athletics
Masters Athletics in South Africa, previously known as Veterans Athletics for men and women over 30, has existed since 1974. It was founded by Danie Burger, a former Springbok, pole-vaulter, hurdler, and decathlete and physiotherapist in the early 1970s. During this period, David Pain, an American lawyer, organized a mile race for men over 40, which was the origin of the term "masters."
Increased Physical Activity
Masters Athletics provides a structured and motivating environment for individuals aged 30+ to engage in regular exercise, combating sedentary lifestyles and improving overall health. The competitive aspect encourages consistent training and progress monitoring.
Fostering Social Cohesion
Community Building: CGMA provides a supportive community for Masters athletes, fostering camaraderie and social interaction through shared activities and goals. Joining a club encourages valuable peer support, reducing feelings of isolation and promoting social connection.

Age-Inclusive Sport
The program caters specifically to the 30+ demographic, addressing the often-overlooked needs of this age group for structured physical activity. It demonstrates that athletic pursuits are accessible and beneficial at all ages.
